Sound Machine Sound Effects

A while back, David Burbank (also known as David from the Basement, DFTB and The Last Burbank) gave Luke a little sound effects toy called the Sound Machine (link points to Amazon). It’s a small red device that includes 16 different sound effects, each with their own button. Luke has played a number of the sound effects on recent shows; but, the audio quality left a lot to be desired. Thus, I had to procure the device for my own and record each of the sound effects myself.

Since the device doesn’t have a headphone jack or a line out, I had to record all of the audio from the device’s built-in speaker using the built-in microphone on my laptop. To reduce the amount of noise around me, I draped a blanket over myself, the laptop and the device on the laptop. I used Audacity to record all of the sound effects; then, I sliced and diced the sound effects up after tweaking the audio levels and passed it through an equalizer filter to lift the lower frequencies and trim the higher ones. The equalization was done to correct the thin audio quality coming from the built-in microphone.

I have labeled the sound effects by the row number (Rx), button number (By, from left to right) and my own description of the sound effect.

OPP Segment Intro Drops

Back on TBTL #1588, Luke and Andrew started a brand new segment called “OPP”, “Other People’s Problems”. Up until recently, the segment kicked off with a drop of a guy yelling “Boy!!! Do we got some problems, Newark!” followed by the “O.P.P” song by Naughty By Nature.

“Boy!!! Do we got some problems, Newark!”

Of course, the volume of the guy yelling “Boy!!! Do we got some problems, Newark!” has caught Luke and Andrew off-guard a good number of times. Recently, when the segment would come up, Luke would only play the “O.P.P” song.

On TBTL #2316, Luke referred to above omission and would then, predictably, yell his own spin on that line:

Luke: Yelling “Boy, do we have problems, Newark!!!”

So, it would be negligent of me if I didn’t create a drop of Luke yelling that line and combine that with the “O.P.P.” song.

Crazy Town x Bart Simpson: Barterfly

Back on TBTL #2237, Luke and Andrew played a mashup of an instrumental version of Crazy Town’s “Butterfly” and an a cappella version of “Do The Bartman” that was sent in by, then, an anonymous listener. The guys ended up dubbing the mashup “Barterfly”. Since I could not get a clean pull of the song from the show, I was able to locate both tracks and re-create the mashup to the best of my ability.

Since then, the creator of the mashup, Joe-Joe, took off the Cloak of Anonymity, and posted a link to the full mashup on Soundcloud onto the sTens Facebook group. Unfortunately, the clip is no longer available on SoundCloud, but I received a copy of it that can be posted:

Exciting Celebrate Music

One of the drops that Luke has in his arsenal is something called “Exciting Celebrate Music”, which he plays when there is celebratory or exciting announcement to be made. The drop starts off with the intro from Kool & The Gang’s “Hollywood Swinging”, then proceeds with a party horn sound, and rounds out with The 45 King’s “The 900 Number”.

I noticed that recently, almost every time Luke played that drop, Andrew starts laughing when it gets to the party horn sound. An example of this can be found in TBTL #2094:

Since I haven’t been able to get a clean take of the “Exciting Celebrate Music” drop from the show, I decided recreate the drop as close as I possibly could.

I also created a version where I inserted a clip of Andrew laughing roughly in the spot where he starts laughing on the show.

Andrew: The Marsupial Gurgle Sound

At the 47m 24.519s mark of show #1583, Andrew Walsh made an interesting sound that wasn’t commented on until show #1584. The sound ended up being named both “Marsupial Gurgle” and “Barabajagal“.

As requested by a listener, I have created a clip that puts the Marsupial Gurgle in context of the discussion:

As mentioned, the Marsupial Gurgle sound was not commented on until a listener sent in an e-mail asking what that sound was and described it as  a “sweet gurgle of an infant marsupial”

I have uploaded the first part of the e-mail segment from that show with the listener e-mail, and with Luke and Andrew discussing about it:

And yes, it was Luke that officially christened the name of the sound, “Marsupial Gurgle”:

Luke spent some of his spare time creating a few Marsupial Gurgle remixes.

Andrew then attempted to recreate the Marsupial Gurgle sound on show #1584:

The attempted recreation sounds somewhat close to one of the sounds Strong Bad makes in “The System is down”:

Clips and Drops from Tim and Eric

Luke and Andrew have used a number of clips from “Tim and Eric” on the show as drops.
